How to Network Using a Hub

A computer network is a group of interconnected computers that can communicate with each other through Ethernet cables, enabling them to share data. Such a localized network is often referred to as a LAN (local area network). If one computer on the LAN has access to the Internet, its connection can be shared with other computers on the LAN. One basic tool of setting up a LAN is a network hub, a device with several Ethernet ports that allows for hard-wiring more than two computers together.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off all the computers.

    • 2

Connect the Ethernet card in each computer to the hub with an Ethernet cable.

    • 3

      Plug in the hub.

    • 4

Turn on all computers. Depending on your operating system and what you intend to use the network for, it might just work simply by connecting each computer (especially if you are just transferring data and not accessing the Internet). If you plan on sharing an Internet connection that is running on a main computer, you will likely need to take further action.

    • 5

Go to the control panel on the computer that has an active Internet connection. Click on "Network and sharing center", then activate the network setup wizard.

    • 6

Follow the steps of the network setup wizard and click "Finish". Do the same on all other computers connected to the network.

    • 7

      Restart all of the computers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hubs must be connected to their own power source, so if you plan on putting one in a location between groups of computers, make sure an outlet or extension cord is available.
