How to Make Your Own Earring Picture Frame

Most women store their earrings in jewelry boxes. While this is certainly an effective storage method, it's easy for earrings to become tangled with bracelets, necklaces and other types of jewelry. Making your own earring picture frame is a fun way to combat this problem and to display your favorite earrings in the process.

  1. Making an Earring Picture Frame

    • 1

Find an attractive picture frame to use for your earring frame display. The frame can be made of wood, resin or metal. Plain wooden frames are best suited for those who plan to decorate the frame themselves. If you do not wish to embellish the frame in any way, choose a frame that is already attractive and ornamental enough as it is. Smaller-sized frames such as 4-by-6-inch or 5-by-7-inch frames are ideal if you only want to display a few pairs of earrings. A larger, more decorative frame size such as 8-by-10 inches can accommodate far more earrings and serve as an attractive, decorative jewelry display.

Purchase a sheet of plastic canvas from the craft store. Plastic canvas is available in clear as well as a variety of colors. Choose whatever color best matches the frame you will be using. If you do not currently have a hot glue gun and glue sticks, purchase those as well. And If you plan to decorate the frame you will be using, be sure to obtain any paint or decorative elements to help embellish the frame. Examples of embellishments include glitter, buttons, charms and decals.

Paint and decorate the frame if desired. The frame can be decorated in many different ways using a variety of items. If the frame is for a child, you may want to write her name on the frame and embellish it with charms or glitter. Other examples of ornamentation include adding tiny bows, trinkets or rhinestones. Frames for adults can be painted to match a room, treated with specialty paints for an antiqued look or even decoupaged with pretty floral papers for a Victorian look.

Use your scissors to cut the plastic canvas to fit the inside of the frame. The cardboard insert that came with the frame can serve as a template. Remove and discard the plastic or glass photo covering that came with the frame. Line the underside of the frame with hot glue then carefully adhere the plastic canvas to the frame. Set the frame aside facedown to allow the glue to dry. It will dry quickly, and the frame will be ready to use within about 5 minutes.

Gather several pairs of earrings that you would like to hang from the earring picture frame. They are easy to attach to the plastic canvas, which is meshlike and features an abundance of tiny holes. Simply take your dangling earrings and hook them directly through one of the holes in the plastic canvas from the front side of the frame. For studs, carefully push the earrings through the front side of the canvas and fasten the earring backs on the reverse side. When you're finished adding earrings, the earring picture frame can be displayed on a dresser or end table or hung on the wall.
