How to Program the Remote for a New TV

Whenever you purchase a new television set at an electronics store, you will almost always be given a remote control along with the TV. Most of these remotes will already have been programmed to the TV that you purchased. However, if the remote does not seem to control the television set, you may need to manually program the TV remote. Programming the remote for a new TV isn't too difficult, nor is it time-consuming.

Instructions

    • 1

Install batteries into the remote. Most remotes will take either AA or AAA batteries.

    • 2

Plug your TV in and then turn the set on.

    • 3

Look at your remote and search for either a "Code Search" or "Setup" button on the remote. The exact button on the remote will be dependent upon the manufacturer of the remote. This button may be labeled or might be a different color than the other buttons on the remote.

    • 4

Press and hold the appropriate button from step 3. You should hold this button for about five seconds. If the remote has a light on it, hold the button from step 3 until the light blinks. This will mean that the remote is ready to be programmed.

    • 5

Learn the programming code for the remote. This code will be found in the instruction manual that came with your new TV and remote.

    • 6

Enter the code using the number buttons found on the TV remote. Once you have entered the correct code, the light on the remote will blink, indicating that the remote has been programmed. If the remote has no light, you can press either the "Up" or "Down" channel button to test the remote.
