How to Make a Simple Fire Extinguisher
Having a fire safety plan is an important part of home ownership. It is crucial to map an escape route, have emergency numbers posted and plan a family meeting place in the event of a fire emergency. In addition, it is wise to have fire extinguishers in all locations where an open flame is used. While a small extinguisher can be purchased for around $20, larger models can cost more than $200. You can, however, cost effectively make a simple extinguisher using common household products. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Mason jar with lid White vinegar Paper towel Baking soda Tissue paper Measuring tablespoon Rubber band

Pour white vinegar into a mason jar. Fill jar about 1/4 full.

Use a paper towel to dry any vinegar drips or splatters from the inside of the jar.

Fold a two-ply sheet of tissue paper into a square that is about 2 inches larger than jar opening.

Place paper over the mouth of the jar and push into the jar to make a hammock.

Use a rubber band to attach the tissue paper to the outside rim of the jar.

Place a couple of tablespoons of baking soda on top of the tissue paper.

Cover the jar with a lid and screw it closed. Be careful not to mix the vinegar and baking soda.

In the event of a fire, shake the jar to mix the baking soda and vinegar. It will form a frothy liquid.

Point the jar in the direction of the fire and remove the lid to douse flames.

Tips & Warnings
Do not get tissue paper wet, or the baking soda will fall through and start a premature reaction. Keep the lid on the jar when shaking the mixture.
Never stay inside to fight a fire. If the baking soda mixture does not work or the fire becomes worse, leave the area immediately and call emergency officials.
