Digital cameras have opened up a whole new world for amateur photographers. Point-and-shoot cameras are the most popular, but single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras allow home users to take professional-quality shots, and are particularly good for taking action shots. Keep your manual handy, and follow these tips for exploring action photography with your digital SLR.

Things You'll Need:

  • Digital SLR camera Camera manual
  1. Step 1

Choose an appropriate lens for the type of shots you'll be taking. Many action photographers like to use a 200 mm lens. A zoom lens like this will make you feel like part of the action.

  2. Step 2

Choose the fastest shutter speed to begin with. Depending on the setting you're shooting in, you can experiment and adjust your settings to see what gives you the best shot. You may also need to adjust your aperture to accommodate the shutter speed, as faster shutter speeds need more light.

  3. Step 3

Change your shooting mode to continuous. This means that if you hold down the shutter button, your camera will continue to take pictures until you release it. This saves time and allows you to capture many more shots.

  4. Step 4

Experiment with your position and shooting technique at your event. Perfect lens settings cannot compensate for poor angles or bad lighting. If your shot isn't ideal, move around, up or down to get a different perspective.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you'll be shooting outdoors, consider purchasing a UV filter. Filters are relatively inexpensive and screw on to the end of your lens. This will give you clearer shots and will also protect your lens.
