The nose flute is a musical instrument hailing from the South Pacific. In Hawaii, the nose flute is called "Ohe hano ihu" (oh-hay ha-no ee-who), which means, "bamboo, to breath strongly, nose." As the name suggests, the instrument is played by blowing air into the flute with the nose.
In ancient times, a man would use a nose flute to serenade his intended. This practice springs from the Hawaiian belief that air coming through the nose is more pure than that coming from the mouth, because the mouth can lie and the nose cannot. The traditional nose flute is made from a single piece of bamboo and has three finger holes as well as an opening for the entry of air.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thin-walled bamboo, 10 to 20 inches long Dowel rod piece, 1/2 inch thick Wood glue Sandpaper Drill Wood file
  1. Step 1

Seal one end of your bamboo piece by inserting a piece of dowel rod the same diameter as the opening of your bamboo. Secure with glue.

  2. Step 2

Sand the bamboo, following the grain of the wood, until smooth. Use the sandpaper to round off the ends and the sharp edges.

  3. Step 3

Create a flat wedge on the sealed end of the bamboo. Place a square of sandpaper on a flat surface and hold the bamboo at a 45-degree angle against the paper. Rub against the paper to make the flat wedge, at least 1 inch in length. This is where the nose hole will go.

  4. Step 4

Drill an 8 mm hole through the center of the flat wedge, just past the end of the dowel stopper. Insert the wood file into the hole and thin out the edges near the opening.

  5. Step 5

Measure the length of the flute. In the exact center of the flute, in line with the nose hole, drill an 8 mm finger hole.

  6. Step 6

Press your thumb on either side of the hole. Mark the outside edge of your thumb. These marks indicate where the other two holes will be drilled.

  7. Step 7

Drill the second and third finger holes, one thumb width away from the center hole.

Tips & Warnings
  • The length of the bamboo will influence the tones the flute produces, with longer tubes creating deeper tones. If you cannot find any bamboo, a length of PVC pipe can be used in its place.
