How to Hang Heavy Framed Mirrors
It is not difficult to hang a heavy mirror in drywall, but care must be taken to avoid it from falling. This is a two-person job that can be done with a few tools and materials available from most hardware stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Weigh the mirror to determine the strength rating for the mirror wire and hollow wall anchors. First, weigh yourself, then weigh yourself again while holding the mirror. The difference is the weight of the mirror.

To attach the D-rings to the back of the mirror frame, measure one fifth of the length of the mirror from the top of each side and mark with a pencil. Drill pilot holes and fasten the D-rings with screws. Tighten until snug, but do not over tighten.

Start with a piece of mirror wire about three times the length between D-rings. Insert the wire through one D-ring leaving a few inches of excess wire. Double knot and twist the excess wire around the knot area several times. Wrap the twist with electrical tape and trim with with wire clippers if necessary. Run the mirror wire through the other D-ring and back to the first one, repeating the knotting process.

A helper can assist in positioning the mirror, holding it against the wall. Mark a level line on the wall for the mirror top. Mark the center point of mirror, then measure out to the left and right from there a distance equal to one fourth the distance between the D-rings. Draw two vertical lines at these points. The wall anchors will be positioned along these vertical lines.

Ask your helper to hold the mirror by the wire against the vertical lines while you measure the distance from the wire to the top of the mirror frame. Mark the wall with the measurement down from the top of frame and install wall anchors at these two points. Erase the pencil lines and hang the mirror wire on the anchor screws, peeking behind the mirror to adjust until centered and straight.

Tips & Warnings
To successfully hang your mirror wire on the wall anchor screws, it may be necessary to replace the wall anchor screws with large or flat headed screws that can securely accommodate the wire.
