Working with stained glass to create beautiful windows, lampshades and sun catchers may be projects for more advanced stained glass artists. Making stained glass blocks, however, is an excellent way for a novice to break into the world of creating art with stained glass. The same techniques are used, but the pattern is much more forgiving as you only have one size glass piece to cut.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stained Glass Pattern Grease Pencil Glass Cutter Running Pliers Glass Grinder Copper Tape Soldering Iron Solder Flux Safety Glasses Heat-Resistant Work Surface
  1. Step 1

Create a pattern for the size block you wish to create. One block will have six sides, but you only need one pattern. Cut the pattern and lay it on top of the stained glass. Trace around the pattern onto the glass with your grease pencil. Do this six times.

  2. Step 2

Score the glass with your glass cutter, following the grease pencil outline. Press the pliers on either side of your scored line to separate the cut glass from the sheet of glass. Continue until you have six separate cut glass pieces.

  3. Step 3

Grind the rough edges of the stained glass with a file or a glass grinder. Get the edges as smooth as possible before you take the next step.

  4. Step 4

Wrap each piece of glass in copper tape. The tape will give the solder something to stick to as you create your stained glass block.

  5. Step 5

Heat your soldering iron and put on your safety glasses. Place the copper edges of two pieces of glass together at a 90-degree angle. Brace the glass on your work surface so that the glass pieces touch at the copper edges without moving. Add flux to the copper edges. Flux helps the solder flow more smoothly.

  6. Step 6

Run a bead of hot solder along the copper tape. Let it cool and repeat this process until you have four sides of stained glass joined together at the edges.

  7. Step 7

Add the bottom piece of the stained glass block in the same way as you soldered the sides together. Let it cool, and then add the top piece of the block with solder.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice your grinding and soldering techniques before creating this project.
  • Wear protective gear when grinding and soldering glass.
