How to Make Curtains for a Stained Glass Picture Window

  1. Step 1

Measure the size of the stained glass picture window you will be covering with curtains. Use the measuring tape and make sure to measure the height, length and angles of the window.

Decide what type of fabric you want for the window. You can match it to the colors within the stained glass or buy a sheer, flowing fabric that provides minimal privacy so the beauty of the stained glass can still be seen through it. Purchase a curtain rod for the measurements of your curtains, and see if the store can cut your fabric to size.

  3. Step 3

Lay out the fabric for your curtains on a flat surface such as the floor, in front of the stained glass picture window.

  4. Step 4

Cut the fabric to size for your curtains if the store didn't pre-cut it for you. Be very careful and precise when cutting.

Cut strips into the top of the curtains for the rod to go through by cutting one 2- to 3-inch slits for every 5 inches of fabric. Cut out the fabric in between the slits. Design them as you choose. Another idea is to cut a 2- to 3-inch slit through the fabric 2 inches down from the top, and you will not have to cut any extra fabric off. Cut each slit every 4 inches of fabric.

  6. Step 6

Fold each edge of the curtain back 1/2 inch and sew it with the machine or by hand with needle and thread to create an uneven edge that will not fray. This does not have to be very tight, just a measure to secure the structure of the curtain.

  7. Step 7

To create the ties, cut two different strips of fabric, each measuring 1 1/2-inch wide and 5 inches long. Sew the edges if you desire. Each tie will hold the curtain back when you want them open.

  8. Step 8

Insert the curtain rod into the curtains, and hang at least 2 inches above the stained glass picture window.

Tips & Warnings
  • A ladder may be necessary to hang curtains, and it may be easier with another person assisting you measure and hang the curtains.
