Become a Licensed Ultrasound Tech

Ultrasound technicians operate diagnostic imaging equipment in order to analyze medical conditions. The technicians work with physicians to explain imaging procedures to patients and review image interpretations. In addition to being responsible for the operation of imaging equipment, ultrasound technicians also record relevant patient medical history and maintain patient records. The equipment ultrasound technicians use is non-invasive in nature and often relates to obstetrics and gynecology, neurosonography, ophthalmology, and echocardiography. According to Education Online, the average median annual income for ultrasound technicians is more than $50,000.

Instructions

  1. Study and Become Certified to Gain Employment

    • 1

      Gain Post-Secondary Education
Register at a college or university to gain an associate's or bachelor's degree. Consider specialized training at technical schools such Penn Foster University, Ashworth University and Kaplan College. Become Certified
Attend a training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). If you choose to only attend one year of training, after you finish school, complete one year of work study in a clinical setting under the sponsorship of the Society for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS).

    • 3

Participate in Clinical Programs and Internships
Contact the human resources recruiter at local hospitals and clinics. Inform the recruiter that you are in training and are seeking work experience as an ultrasound technician. Get recommendations from your training instructors to increase your chances of being picked up as an intern.

Get Registered and Continue Your Education
Strengthen your credentials by getting registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medicine Sonographers. Continue to pursue your learning by attending industry specific seminars and conferences. Check with the American Society of Neuroimaging and the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography for upcoming conferences, training seminars and in-class and online courses you can attend and gain a certificate of completion from.

      Contact Employers
Set aside a minimum of one hour a day to search job boards, medical association job listings and your local newspaper for ultrasound technician job openings. Write an effective resume that highlights your licenses, internships, and other medical and imaging work experience. If you are seeking employment at a civilian hospital or clinic and have worked in the military as an ultrasound technician, check with your personnel manager about related job openings in the civilian sector prior to being discharged from the military.
