How to Install an Ethernet Card for Windows XP
An ethernet card is an important device for a computer. It allows you to set up an in-home network to log into the Internet. You must have a broadband connection to use an ethernet card; this includes DSL or a cable modem. The ethernet cable looks similar to a phone cord. However, the wire is thicker and the end piece is flatter, as well as wider. The cable connects into the broadband modem and then into your PC through the ethernet card.

1
Gather your driver disk. For most computer components to run in Windows, you need a driver. Your ethernet card should have come with a driver disk. If it did not, look at the device. There should be a manufacturer and model number on it. Even just the name of the manufacturer will work. Look for the card manufacturer's website or log on to a driver site like DriverZone, Network-Drivers or DriverGuide. (See Resources.) You will need to enter the name of the manufacturer, the model number and Windows XP.

2
Remove the screws from the right panel of your tower. These are located in the back, next to the power plug. This will allow you to access your computer components. After removing the panel, lay your computer flat on the floor or a table. The inside of the PC should be toward the ceiling. Work on a soft surface, so you do not scratch the case.

3
Locate the PCI port in the tower. These skinny slots are usually white or cream in color and located on the motherboard. In front of the slot is a hole in the tower. A covering of thin metal may be over the hole. Remove the metal casing. It will be held on by either a screw or a small tab. If there is a tab, wiggle the metal. Throw the metal away.
-
4
Insert the ethernet card into the PCI port. The connections on the bottom of the card will line up with the slot. Make sure it is even and push it in. The ethernet card will be flush with the PCI port.
-
5
Screw the card into place. There is a hole above or near where the metal tab came out. That is where the card will be secure.
-
6
Replace the panel on your tower. Hook the wires back into your tower and plug in the ethernet. Turn on your PC.

7
Insert the disk your drivers are on. If you do not have a disk, you may need to use the USB cable for your network or borrow a friend's computer to obtain the drivers. Install the Windows XP drivers for you ethernet card from the disk. Follow the onscreen instructions, as all cards are different. If you obtain a downloadable driver, click on the ".exe" file for manual installation of the driver.
