Mole crabs, otherwise known as sand fleas, are an excellent bait for catching surf fish like Pompano, Sheepshead and Redfish. They can be bought at most coastal bait shops, but are extremely easy to catch with a mesh trap called a sand flea rake.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sand flea rake Bucket

    Directions

  1. Step 1

Go to a coastal region of the Atlantic & Pacific oceans or the Gulf of Mexico.

  2. Step 2

Drag your sand flea rake through the sand at the shore where the waves wash onto the beach.

  3. Step 3

While pulling your rake in, inspect for any caught sand fleas.

  4. Step 4

Take sand fleas from rake and put into bucket with a small amount of water and sand. This will ensure they stay alive for the remainder of the fishing trip.

Tips & Warnings
  • While best used live, sand fleas can be frozen for use at another time.
