Mulberry paper, made of the bast fibers from the paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera), is a beautiful thing to use in paper crafts of all sorts. Handmade mulberry paper can be used in collages or to make cards, envelopes, books and even lamp shades. Here are four ways to use mulberry paper.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mulberry paper Ribbon Pencil Cutting knife Glue Ruler
  1. Step 1

Create a handmade card out of mulberry paper. Every piece of mulberry paper is slightly different, and some are dyed in many colors. Fold a small rectangle of the paper in half for a simple note or embellish your card with ribbon, hand pressed flowers and leaves, a rubber stamp or scrapbooking accessories.

  2. Step 2

Make a handcrafted envelope from mulberry paper. This is a perfect way to enclose a handwritten letter or handmade card. Use a pencil to draw where you will cut the envelope shape out. Make sure to draw in side flaps. Cut out the envelope and fold in the side flaps, then fold up the bottom and glue the sides together. The top flap is left open for you to seal when ready.

  3. Step 3

Make an accordion book out of your mulberry paper. Begin by folding a long rectangular sheet of the paper in half the long way. Take the two ends you have folded down and, holding the paper horizontally, fold them back up towards the main crease so that they are parallel to it. These folds will create a pocket on each side of the paper at one third the height of the finished book. These should be folded the long way. Use a ruler to help you crease evenly.

  4. Step 4

Crease three or four (or more if you have room) opposing folds into the entire piece to create the accordion, leaving a couple inches at each end to glue on end covers and ribbon ties if you like. These folds are creased perpendicular to the long pocket fold you have made.

  5. Step 5

Create a lampshade out of mulberry paper for an organic, natural look. Cut out however many panels the lampshade frame holds. Many hold six panels. Cut each piece out slightly larger than the panels so that you have room to glue overlapped edges. Use PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue for this project.
