How to Create a Search Engine for a Website

It's super-simple to add search capability to your website. A Yahoo Search box allows your visitors to search the content of your website and to search the web. Just follow these steps and you'll be all set.

Things You'll Need

• Computer Internet access Access to the HTML of the website to which you want to add search functionality

Instructions

1. Go to the Yahoo Search Box site (see additional resources), and click "step-by-step instructions."

2. Pick which type of search engine you want to add to your site. There are four types of searches. Two web searches--one wide and one narrow format--and two web/site searches--one wide and one narrow format, which also allows visitors to search within your site. The difference between wide- and narrow-format searches lies in the look and feel of the search box. Each search choice comes with its own HTML code.

3. If you've chosen to use the web and internal site search code, there is a part of the HTML code you need to edit. Scroll down toward the bottom of the code, and you will see "YOUR SITE DOMAIN." Replace this with your website information.

4. Just copy the HTML code offered on whichever site search you want, and paste it into the coding of your website.
