How to Use a Facial Steamer

  1. Step 1

Prep your face. The purpose of a facial steamer is to open your pores. Since you are opening your pores, your skin becomes susceptible to any dirt or oil on the surface. Properly cleanse your face to avoid breakouts or clogged pores. Wash your face with facial cleanser and towel-dry it gently.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the steamer. Look at your facial steamer and determine if it needs batteries or if it plugs into an outlet. If it needs batteries, put the batteries in. If it uses an outlet, set the facial steamer near the outlet you will be using. Fill a measuring cup with approximately 1 cup of water. Locate the reservoir of the steamer and fill it up with water. Be careful to not add too much water. You don't want it to overflow.

  3. Step 3

Gather all the extras. You will need several additional items when you use your steamer---some to use during and a few for after you steam your face. Gather a large towel, toner, moisturizer, cotton balls and your favorite facial mask. The towel needs to be large enough to cover your shoulders and face. The towel should be long enough to drape over your back when you put it over your head.

  4. Step 4

Use the steamer. Now that you're prepped and primed, it's time to use the steamer. Plug the steamer into an outlet, if required, and turn the power on. It should take one to two minutes for your steamer to start up and begin releasing steam. Once the steam starts coming out, place the towel over your head and over the steamer to lock in the steam. Your face should be 8 to 12 inches away from the steamer. Allow the steam to open your pores for 5 to 10 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Finish up. Once your face has been steamed, gently exfoliate your face and rinse it off. Towel dry your face. Apply your favorite mask and allow it to dry. Rinse your face with warm water and then with cool water. Towel dry your face again. Soak a cotton ball with toner and apply the toner to your face. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer. Enjoy your new glowing skin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add scented oil to the water before putting it into the facial steamer for an aromatherapy effect. Tea tree oil can be used for acne prone skin and lavender oil can be used for all other skin types.
  • Don't forget to power down your facial steamer after using it. If it is plugged into an outlet, unplug it and if it uses batteries make sure to turn the power off.
