How to Change Headlights in Ford Contour

The Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystique (a similar car) rolled off of Ford's assembly lines in 1994. These models remained in production until the year 2000, but replacement parts for the Contour are still in abundance. Replacing the headlights in a Ford Contour is a simple process, and should take less than 20 minutes to accomplish. You can choose to replace the entire assembly or just the individual bulbs. New headlights for your Contour will cost about $100 for each headlight assembly (left and right), or less than $20 for each individual bulb.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your Contour's front grille. You can do this by raising the hood and removing two screws that are located on top of the grille.

    • 2

Remove the headlight assembly. The headlight assembly is held into the front of your Contour by three screws. Two screws will be located on top of the assembly, and one on the bottom.

    • 3

Replace the headlight assembly, if necessary. If you are only changing individual bulbs, make sure you replace the correct bulbs. Each assembly holds three light bulbs, including the bright, dim and turn signal bulbs.

    • 4

Replace the headlight assembly and reattach the three screws to hold it in place.

    • 5

Replace the front grille of your Contour and the two screws that hold it onto the front of the car.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is usually a good idea to replace bulbs together (in pairs). This will allow the bulbs to wear at the same rate.

  • If you choose to replace only the individual light bulbs, do not touch the new light bulbs. The contact of your skin on the bulbs will cause the light bulbs to burn out much sooner.
