How to Apply for a British Passport

A passport is an important document that allows you to leave and re-enter a country after traveling overseas. Only certain people are eligible to receive a British passport. According to the British Identity and Passport office, only British citizens, British subjects or British nationals are eligible. If you meet these requirements you can apply for a British passport. The process of applying for a passport is relatively simple, but you will need to provide plenty of personal information and pay an application fee.

  1. If You Live in the UK

      Visit the website of the British Identity and Passport Service (IPS) (see link in Resources below) and click on "Passports." On the next page, click "Fill out your application form here."

      Click "Start application process." The IPS website will guide you through the required information. Be prepared to enter details on your date of birth, address and citizenship status. You will also need to provide information on your parents, including their birth dates, citizenships and marriage information. When you have completed the questions, a summary will be displayed. Ensure the information in each section is correct and click "Submit application." The application will be transmitted to the IPS and they will print the application and mail it to you for your signature.

      Wait for the completed application to be mailed to you by the IPS. The form should be mailed approximately 24 hours after your submit the application online. When you receive the form, sign and date it.

      Mail the signed form back to the IPS at the address listed in the form. You will also need to include additional documentation with the form, including two passport photos and a certified copy of a nationality document certifying you are British issued by the Registry Office. You will also need to include a check or money order addressed to the Identity and Passport Service for the application fee of 72 pounds.

      Wait for a letter from a regional passport office requesting a passport interview. Call the number listed on the letter and request an appointment. This interview is mandatory for all individuals applying for a British passport for the first time. If this is not your first British passport, skip this step and continue to Step 6.

      Wait for your passport to arrive in the mail. If this is your first British passport, the entire process may take up to six weeks. If this is not your first passport, the process should only take about four weeks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since the process of obtaining a British passport is somewhat lengthy, be sure to give yourself plenty of time if you are planning an overseas trip in the near future. Plan at least six weeks to complete the entire application process if this is your first passport.
