Making a hardback book cover is easy and takes only a few minutes. Use decorative paper or grocery sacks to make a hardback book cover. You can also put on clear plastic covers when it's important to be able to see the dust jacket or the cover of the book.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Decorative paper or clear plastic Scissors Tape
  1. Step 1

Remove the dust jacket from the book.

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of paper that is 2 inches larger than the dust jacket on all sides. If there is no dust jacket, lay the book open on its spine and cut the paper 2 inches larger than the hardback boards.

  3. Step 3

Lay the paper flat with the decorative side facing away from you. Center the dust jacket or the open book face down on the paper.

  4. Step 4

Crease the top and bottom of the paper over the top and bottom of the dust jacket. Or fold the paper at the top and bottom the same size as the hard cover.

  5. Step 5

Fold each side of the paper over the ends of the dust jacket, or over the inside of the outer edges of the book.

  6. Step 6

Tape the flaps of the cover you've made to the paper you creased at the top and bottom. If you don't have a dust jacket, lay the book on the cover you've made and tape the top and bottom of each flap to the top and bottom of the part of the paper you creased in Step 5. Don't tape the cover to the dust jacket or to the book.

  7. Step 7

Purchase specially made book covers from Brodart or Gaylord Brothers that are acid-free and archival quality for valuable books.

Tips & Warnings
  • Handle valuable books with care. Frequently, a lot of the value is in the dust jacket or the hardback covers.
