How to Clean a Martin Guitar
Martin guitars are made with wood that is not very thick. They can't take extreme temperatures, and they cannot be cleaned with just any product. If you plan on owning a Martin guitar you should read all you can about how to take care of one. You want to make sure you store it in the right conditions and that you clean it off after each use. This will keep the guitar at its best for a long time.

1
Keep a dry cloth with your guitar. Whenever you finish playing it, give it a wipe down. You want to wipe the strings and the guitar gently to remove any sweat or oil that you may have gotten on the guitar while you were playing it. Then store the guitar as usual.

2
Use a warm wet rag between polishings. Do not use any cleaners. Just stick with wetting a rag and wringing it out. Wipe down the guitar, strings and straps. Dry it off with a separate dry rag.

Purchase Martin polish and a Martin polishing cloth. The polish and cloth are each $4.99 (as of 2009), so it won't hurt your budget to keep your guitar in good condition. You can buy these products at your local music store or online at PlayBetterBluegrass.com (see Resources).

Spray the Martin guitar polish on the cleaning cloth. Gently run the cloth in a circular motion on the guitar's surfaces. Be careful around the strings as you don't want to use the polish on them. The guitar polish will not only polish the guitar, but it will clean it as well.

5
Clean your guitar once per month with the Martin guitar polish to keep it looking like new. If you don't play your guitar that often, you won't need to clean it as often as once per month.
