How to Install a Sound Card for Windows

A sound card is a device that allows the input and output of audio to and from a computer. Usually a sound card has plugs for sound output to speakers, for headphones and input from a microphone, but may have other connections as well. Sound cards come in two general types: integrated cards, which are sound devices that are a part of the motherboard, and dedicated devices, which are separate sound cards that must be installed into the motherboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PC and disconnect the power cord and any cords coming from your current sound card. You may want to remove all cords so that you can set the computer down on its side.

    • 2

Open the case of the computer by unscrewing the left side panel. Set the side panel aside.

    • 3

Locate an empty PCI slot, or the slot with your current card. PCI slots are parallel light-colored slots that line up with slot covers at the back of the tower case.

    • 4

Take off the slot cover, or uninstall the old card. A slot cover usually requires a single screw to be removed. If you are taking out an old card, unscrew it if necessary, then grip firmly on both ends and pull straight outward.

    • 5

Install the new card. Line up the card in the slot first, then put one thumb on either end of the card to apply pressure and push the gold tipped connectors into the slot. The card will suddenly pop in place once you push hard enough.

    • 6

Install software drivers for the card, then restart your computer. Software drivers are essentially instructions that tell your computer's operating system how to use the sound card. Your card likely came with a disk containing drivers, otherwise download drivers online from the maker of the sound card.

Tips & Warnings

  • * If your sound doesn't work after installing the card, make sure your speakers and audio are turned on.

  • * If your system crashes after installing a sound card, attempt to find different drivers for the card.
