Building a small table for your kitchen nook is easier if you use recycled materials. Find a coffee table at your local thrift store or yard sale that will fit the area of your kitchen nook. The appearance of the coffee table is not relevant, as you will refurbish it to match your kitchen décor. Coffee tables come in all shapes and sizes, so you have a good chance of finding a table that will work. Repurposing used furniture is a cost-effective way to furnish your home as well as being an eco-friendly way to decorate.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old Coffee Table 4 Table Legs Medium and Light-Grade Sandpaper Primer & Paint or Stain Polyurethane Top Coat Paint Supplies Wood Screws Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Remove the legs from the coffee table with a screwdriver, if necessary. Some legs may be removed by twisting them, rather than using a screwdriver. Keep the legs for a future project. A storage box in the garage containing parts and pieces from furniture you refurbish is a handy way to possibly avoid shopping for parts. You may not need them now, but chances are you can use them to make another coffee table, a tray or as part of a wind chime.

  2. Step 2

Sand the top of the coffee table to remove the remnants of whatever finish is there. If the coffee table was stained, you can re-stain it to in a shade similar or darker. If the coffee table has been painted, you will need to paint over it, as you cannot stain over paint, unless you sand it down to bare wood. Remove any of the sanding debris with a damp washcloth.

  3. Step 3

Apply one coat of primer or stain to the bottom of the wood for your kitchen nook table and to the new table legs. If your table legs are decorative, it may be easier to spray paint.
Let the paint or stain dry, then add a coat of paint or another layer of stain.

  4. Step 4

Flip the wood over and finish the top of your table with primer and paint or stain. Apply as many coats as necessary to attain the look you desire. Finish coating the table legs all the way around.

  5. Step 5

Add a coat of polyurethane to the top and legs of your kitchen table. This will help protect the table's finish from stains and moisture.

  6. Step 6

Attach the table legs to the underside of the top using the same holes left when you removed the coffee table legs. If you prefer the kitchen nook table legs to be in a different location, drill starter holes for the screws to make inserting them easier. Flip your table over and enjoy your new kitchen nook table.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add casters to the new table legs to make your nook table mobile.
  • Wear gloves when you handle wood and protective masks when painting, staining or applying polyurethane.
