If you are looking for a recession proof job, getting involved in the medical field is a great idea. While many people are losing their jobs, jobs in the medical field continue to grow. One great option is to become a CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant. This job requires minimal education and money to get started. If you are interested in becoming a CNA yourself, here are the simple steps to getting your CNA certificate.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Enroll in a CNA program. In order to take these classes, you'll need to have a high school diploma or a GED. There are various programs offered. They can last anywhere from two to six weeks. Some community colleges offer these programs, but you'll also find them at hospitals, nursing homes and at Red Cross branches. Classes vary in length depending on whether you are going to class full time or part time. Choose the program that best works with your schedule.

  2. Step 2

Study and work hard during classes. Take your practical training seriously as well, since you'll not only need to pass the written part of the test, but the practical part of the test as well. Some of the information that will be taught in the CNA certification course includes patient care, infection control, safety regulations and CPR instruction. Hands on teaching will include personal hygiene, recording vital signs, communication and basic nutrition.

  3. Step 3

Study for the exam and take sample tests, which are available for purchase. This will help you to study for the actual exam. Getting some practice in is an excellent idea and will help take away some of the stress of taking the actual test on exam day. Often you will be able to work while preparing for your exam. Working and applying what you have learned will give you a great hands on way to prepare for the practical portion of the exam you'll soon be taking. See Resources below for more help preparing for your exam.

  4. Step 4

Take the CNA exam in your state. This exam consists of two parts. You'll have to take the written test, which will be based on what you learned during the lecture part of your training. The other part of the test is the practical test. This tests the skills that you learned doing clinicals. You must pass both parts of the test in order to get your CNA certificate. Of course, the exams can vary a bit from state to state. It's best that you find out the specific requirements in your state, since it is your specific state that will be giving you your certification. Some states may have slightly different requirements or testing procedures.

  5. Step 5

Find out your results. You should be mailed the results of your exam. If you pass, you'll be issued your CNA certificate. Then you'll be ready to start your job search and enjoy the job that you've worked hard to earn.
