Fiberglass is a popular option when selecting a shower for a bathroom design. The molded one-piece design makes them easy to clean and maintain. In addition, they are generally less likely to leak and are resistant to shrinkage and swelling. However, even the strongest materials can sustain cracks after extended use and wear. When this happens you can either remove the shower pan and replace it with a new one, or repair the cracked surface. In addition to being a cost effective option, repairing a cracked fiberglass shower pan is a moderately easy fix with the right materials.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Newspaper Damp rag Putty knife Marine plastic filler Gel coat Course sandpaper (60- or 80-grit) Wet / dry sandpaper (220-, 320- and 400-grit) Gel coat colorant Rubber gloves Small paint roller Plastic wrap
  1. Step 1

Cover the area with a plastic drop cloth to keep other surfaces clean.

  2. Step 2

Use course sandpaper to sand the crack and about 2 inches of the surrounding surface.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a fiberglass repair kit from your local hardware store. The kit will contain fiberglass resin, hardener and fiberglass cloth. Read all instructions before using the kit.

  4. Step 4

Cut a fiberglass cloth patch just slightly smaller than the crack. Cut two more patches, each progressively smaller than the first patch.

  5. Step 5

Combine hardener and fiberglass resin as directed on the repair kit packaging.

  6. Step 6

Place the three patches into the hardener and resin mixture. Remove the smallest patch and place over crack. Layer the remaining two patches in the same manner, starting with the medium and ending with the largest piece. Let the patches dry for at least eight hours.

  7. Step 7

Sand the dried patches with 60 or 80-grit sandpaper. Use a damp rag to wipe the area clean.

  8. Step 8

Use a putty knife to spread the marine plastic filler evenly over the patches. Consult the putty packaging for drying time recommendations.

  9. Step 9

Blend filler into the surrounding shower pan surface using course sandpaper. Use a damp rag to wipe the area clean.

  10. Step 10

Tint the gel coat to match the shower pan surface. Refer to the colorant packaging for detailed instructions on color tinting.

  11. Step 11

Use a small paint roller to apply a 1/8-inch thick layer of gel coat.

  12. Step 12

Place plastic wrap over the surface and let it cure overnight.

  13. Step 13

Use a 220-grit sandpaper to wet sand the surface. Wipe it with a damp rag. Repeat the process with a 320 and 400-grit paper until the area is blended together.
