Things You'll Need:
- Fabric Thread Straight pins Sewing machine Iron
-
Step 1
Measure the length of your curtain rod and down as far as you would like the swag to hang once tied or looped. Add 2 feet to this measurement (more if you expect to make extra-big loops). Determine the width of the material based on how you would like the swag to hang. If you plan to tie it, keep the width between 12 and 24 inches. If you would like larger panels of material to hang, make the width between 24 and 36 inches. In either case, you have 4 or 5 inches of leeway to adjust the final product when you hang it, so don't stress too much about getting the measurement perfect.
-
Step 2
Choose material that will loop or tie easily. Rayon, silk, faux silk or sheer materials work well. Stay away from stiff velvet, denim or heavy cotton.
-
Step 3
Cut your selected material to fit the measurements you determined.
-
Step 4
Around the perimeter of the material, fold the edges in a ¼ inch. Iron or pin the fold to keep it in place. Sew a straight hem an 1/8-inch from the edge to secure. Remove the pins (if used).
-
Step 5
Fold the sewn edges in again a ½-inch and iron or pin to secure. Sew a straight hem a ¼ inch from the edge. Remove any pins used.
-
Step 6
Iron your finished curtain (if needed), but stay away from starch in order to allow the material to drape well.
-
Step 7
Loop, tie or hang your swag curtain as desired.
