Analyze the financial goals of the person who the policy is being bought for. The goals will differ depending on whether the person is a child, middle age adult, or a senior. It is important to work within the income level of the perspective policy holder.

Research with your family member, what their goals and plans are for their financial future. Many people look at insurance as a death insurance, but with the right policy, it can also be a savings policy.

Check out the types of policies available. There are three basic policies. They are: 1) Term insurance which covers upfront debt, for the cheapest price, but with no actual policy value; 2) Whole life insurance which provides basic coverage, and when paid up provides a small cash payout equal to the amount of cash paid into the policy; and 3) Universal Life Insurance which is a combination of a whole life policy with investment where part of the premium goes towards life insurance coverage and the remaining premium goes towards the investment portion of the policy.

Look for a life insurance company. Every insurance company has a rating provided for them. It is best to chose a company with at least an A minus rating. The company should be able to send an agent to your house or to a public meeting place to discuss your policy needs. Also, some companies require a physical. If your family member won't take a physical or won't pass one, they may be limited to a more expensive whole life policy.

Purchase only what your family member wants. Some companies put the customer first, and some put their profit first. If you are being harassed into buying a policy you do not want, tell them you will get back to them later. Only purchase what you want, when you want, at your terms and costs.
