Instructions

    • 1

Make fabric strips by marking the fabric every 1-2" along the edge. Snip the marks with scissors and then tear to make scraps. You can acheive a cleaner looking basket by cutting the strips with scissors.

    • 2

Thread a fabric strip on your needle, and then wrap the strip around the end of the cord, overlapping enough to cover the cord. Once you have wrapped a few inches, you can coil the cord around itself to form a tight circle. Secure the coil by threading your fabric strip through the center. Continue to wrap the fabric around the cord, and then thread it through the previous coil about every two inches to make the basket secure. Overlap new fabric strips about a half inch or more over the previous one to prevent unraveling.

    • 3

Shaping the basket is simple. Once you have made the base the size you want it, you can shape the sides by coiling the cord vertically on top of the previous row. Continue wrapping and threading through the previous coil until your basket is the height you want.

To finish, cut the end of your cord diagonally for a smooth top. Loop the fabric through the previous coil several times, then use a glue gun to fasten the strip to the coil on the inside of the basket. If you want to add a handle, wrap the length of the cord you need for a handle and then wrap two inches more. Cut the cord in a diagonal and then fasten the end of the handle to the top of the basket by looping the fabric around the top coil and last two inches of the cord. Glue the fabric strip to the coil on the inside of the basket.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can make the basket faster with a thicker craft cord. Once you have mastered a circular basket, you can experiment with different shapes. Try making an oval shape by coiling your basket around a longer length of cord.

  • Be careful not to burn yourself when using the glue gun or cut yourself when using the scissors.
