How to Troubleshoot Windows Media Player 9

Windows Media Player is the most used digital media player in the world. Released in 2003, WMP 9 was launched with greater video and audio functions for use in a Microsoft Windows XP environment. Its release date coincides with the introduction of Apple's iTunes product for Windows and the iTunes Music Store. WMP 9 aimed to provide an iTunes-like experience for users but under the Windows flag.

Since 2003, two newer versions of WMP have been released.

Ensure that WMP is compatible with the media file. WMP can provide playback for a number of common formats as well as its own proprietary format. These include audio CD (.cda), audio interchange file format (.aif or .aiff), Windows media files (.asf, .asx, .wax, .wm, .wma, .wmd, .wmp, .wmv, .wmx, .wpl and .wvx), Windows audio and video files (.avi and .wav), Moving Picture Experts Group (.mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .mpa, .mpe, .mp2v* and .mpv2), Musical Instrument Digital Interface or MIDI files (.mid, .midi, and .rmi), UNIX audio files (.au and .snd), MP3 files (.mp3 and .m3u) and Macromedia Flash (.swf).

Windows Media Player 9 cannot play Apple's proprietary format (.aac), used for files purchased at the iTunes Music Store.

Ensure that the file path is entered correctly. Windows and its supported applications require paths or trails of folder and file names to open and operate a file. If the file path is not entered correctly, the application will report an error. To check this, go to the View menu and make sure the address bar is open. Then double-check the path for any misspellings or errant characters.

Resolve the timing out of an operation. WMP is capable of playing files from subscription-based services such as Rhapsody or Napster, but the player may have issues keeping current with the attached security settings. To fix the issue, open Internet Explorer (WMP uses Internet Explorer's security settings) and open the Tools menu. Under Tools, click Internet Options and then the Connections tab. Then click the LAN Settings button. In this window, find the Automatically Detect Settings check box and make sure it is unchecked. Click OK until the Internet Explorer windows close.

Fix issues with music management. WMP can be used to import and manage audio files as well as burn audio and MP3 discs. When using WMP, the software will rip the tracks and store them in the My Music folder of the My Documents folder. If WMP presents an error message of files not copying correctly, it can be resolved by switching the file management to analog. Open the Device Manager, located in Applications. Right-click on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive (depending on how the computer is equipped) and choose properties. Find the check box for "Enable digital CD audio for the CD-ROM device" and make sure it is unchecked.

Fix issues with burning audio CDs. If WMP reports an error burning a CD, first diagnose whether the disc is able to be burned. Take the disc out of the drive and inspect it. Check that the disc is not damaged, scratched or dirty. It may help to reduce the writing speed. Windows will often default to maximum possible speed. It may help to change the speed to 8x or 12x. To do this, click the Tools menu and select Options. Click the Devices tab and double-click the CD drive. Under the Recording tab, a lower speed can be selected. If problems persist, quit all other programs operating on the PC and restart WMP. At the end of this process, a full restart of the PC may be necessary.
