How to Make Sugar Flowers for Cake Decorations
Sugar flowers dress up your baked goods by providing a beautiful adornment atop the frosting. They can be extremely useful in hiding frosting flaws, too. With some patience and the right tools, you can add sugar flowers to any baked item. You needn't use them right away if you need to transport them for later use. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Fondant Tylo paste (carboxy methyle cellulose, CMC) Rolling pin Corn starch 5-petal flower cutter
Instructions

1
Make a fondant (see Resources). Fondant is a sugar syrup that becomes a thick frosting, ideal for icing and cake decorations.
-
2
Roll out the fondant using your rolling pin. Knead in Tylo powder while rolling out the fondant, if you want the flowers to harden for storage. This way, you can transport the flowers separately from the cake and decorate on site if the cake is being used for a reception or gala event.

3
Use a five petal cutter (see Resources) and cut the flower shapes out of the fondant. Similar to a cookie cutter, this small cutter slices the fondant into flower-shaped pieces.
-
4
Dust the flower veiner with corn starch to prevent sticking and place the flower shape on the flower veiner (see Resources). This will give the flowers the appearance of a real flower by adding detail into the petals.
-
5
Transfer the flower onto a cupcake, cake or other baked item. Alternately, if you've used the Tylo powder, transfer the flower to a non-stick surface for transport.
