How to Choose the Right Shaft for a Golf Club

Using the wrong type of shaft on your golf club for your playing style can dramatically affect your golf game. If you are using a shaft that is too stiff, your ball probably won't go as far as it could and may veer towards the right if you are a right-handed golfer. If it isn't stiff enough, the ball may fly too high and veer towards the left. Choosing the right shaft can make a big improvement on your score.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose between a steel or a graphite shaft. A steel shaft is more durable, but feels heavier. A graphite shaft will be lighter and is made with more choices for torque ratings.

    • 2

Choose the flex. The shaft flex rating is denoted by X (Extra Stiff), S (Stiff), R (Regular), A (Senior or Amateur) and L (Ladies). In general, people who hit 250 yards or more with their driver need a Stiff shaft, from 230 to 250 yards need a Regular, from 200 to 230 yards use a Senior, and fewer than 200 yards Ladies. Very few people should use an X shaft.

    • 3

Choose a bend point. A bend point of low will help if you need to hit the ball higher, while a bend point of high will help if you need to hit the ball on a lower trajectory. Otherwise, choose a mid rating.

    • 4

Determine the shaft length. Stand with your arms hanging by your sides and have someone measure from where you wrist meets your hand to the floor. Use the table to determine what length your five-iron should be, and base the rest of your shaft lengths on this number.

    • 5

Test out your shafts. If your golf shop does not allow you to test shafts, find one that does, or see if any golf shaft manufacturers offer a demo day in your area where you can try out their products for free.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find a reputable club fitter to help you make your decision, especially if you are investing a lot of money in new shafts.
