Building a desktop PC that is both fast and stable requires careful shopping, design and consideration for the cooling issue. Many new desktop builders looking to get the best performance out of their machine neglect to design their tower to handle the high heat that it generates. This in turn limits the stability and performance of the machine while causing greater part wear.

Construct a budget for your desktop computer. Determine how much performance that you want. For example, if you are a hard-core gamer, you may want to spend a higher percentage of your budget on a graphics card than you would otherwise. A modern processor is also important, but purchasing the most expensive models will provide relatively limited performance returns.

Choose a case with good ventilation. It is difficult to visualize how air flow will function inside the case without all the parts in front of you. Favor mid-size to large cases with four or more air vents. Purchasing additional fans is inexpensive and can provide much better cooling than you would have otherwise.

Order the parts. Check every part for compatibility issues with the motherboard by conducting an Internet search with both the make and model of the part in question and that of the motherboard. Order from a computer parts store that has a comprehensive Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) policy so that nonfunctional parts can be returned without incurring additional costs. Read reviews on every part that you purchase, both those written by customers and professionals. Look for objective performance measurements using identical criteria to inform your purchasing decisions.

Follow all instructions that come with all components carefully. Be sure to ground yourself to discharge static electricity while touching the internals of your computer. Purchase a static-discharging wristband to make this process foolproof. An antistatic mat can also reduce the risk to the integrity of your computer components.

Maintain your custom desktop computer to preserve its stability and performance. Keep your operating system updated regularly. Install and run antivirus software regularly. Use canned dust remover to keep air ports free of lint.
