How to Work an Apple iPod
The iPod is a popular media player developed by Apple Inc. Released in 2001, there are now multiple variations of the player. These include the Touch, Nano, Shuffle and Classic. To cater to those on a budget, there are also different tiers of each iPod whose difference is mainly storage capacity. The fourth generation Nano, for example, comes in 8 and 16 GB models, as well as a great amount of colors. Learn the basic controls of this device, which can be daunting to control for the first-time user.

If using your iPod for the first time, it is recommended that you charge it for at least three hours with the included USB cable before regular use. Attach one end of the cable to the bottom of the iPod, and the other end to your computer's USB port. The charging process should proceed automatically.

Find the "Hold" switch on your iPod. The location differs on the various models, but it is usually located at the top or left side of the player. If there is an orange color on the switch, push it so that the orange disappears. The color indicates that the iPod is in the "Hold" or locked position. When in hold, none of the iPod's controls will work, only playing whatever media it was set for, if any. This function is useful to avoid accidental pressing of controls.

Place your thumb on the control wheel and selection button--the white circle on the face of the player--while using your other fingers to support its back. The wheel acts as a directional pad, where the top leads you to the menu, the left and right sides are for reversing and forwarding (respectively) through music or the menu, the bottom acts as play/pause (as well as the OFF control, if held down long enough) and the center is the selection button.

4
Rotate you thumb clockwise and counterclockwise around the white ring. The action controls the volume and scan of music, as well as scrolls through the different options for the menu depending on which screen you are currently interacting with.

To import songs onto your iPod, download and install the iTunes software from the Apple website (see "Additional Resources," below). Once installed, you will be able to import individual songs, libraries, playlists, movies and other media onto your media player. To do this, your iPod must be connected to your computer with the included cable.

Tips & Warnings
There is no true "ON" button for the iPod, any button will activate it when pressed. Wipe down the body and screen of your iPod periodically to prevent the screen from getting too cloudy. Don't forget to charge your iPod when the battery gets too low. Most versions have about 10 hours of music playback on a full charge. Keep the original receipt and packaging for your iPod to take advantage of any warranties that are included should it become damaged or malfunction.
When traveling, try to keep the player away from any other metal items in your pockets, as movement may cause your iPod to get scratched or damaged.
