How to Find the MICR Code on a Check Book

MICR toner, pronounced "my ker," is a special type of magnetic toner used to print certain characters on, among other things, checks. MICR, which stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, is an added security measure, as there is special technology required to read it. Additionally, it enables important numbers on checks to remain readable regardless of what other stamps or writing appear on top of them. The numbers printed with MICR, generally routing and account numbers, are often referred to as MICR code.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your checkbook so a blank check is visible.

    • 2

Look at the lower left-hand corner of your check.

    • 3

Notice the numbers and code printed on the bottom of the check. The font will look different and more "mechanical" than the other types of typeface on your checks. This is the MICR code.

    • 4

Flip through your checkbook. You'll see the same numbers on each check. These are your routing and account numbers, and they should not vary.

    • 5

Make note of your MICR code numbers, so you have them readily available when making online check payments. This way when you are asked for your routing and account numbers, you don't have to look for the MICR code on your checkbook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your MICR code numbers safeguarded, as they can be used to commit check fraud.
