How to Open Vinyl Replacement Windows

You've just moved in to your new house, and you love the vinyl replacement windows that the seller had installed. They're neat and energy efficient, and make the house look new. There's only one problem: you haven't a clue how to open them. There are a couple of tricks to using vinyl replacement windows, and within minutes you'll be opening, tilting and locking them as though you've been doing it for years.

  • Swivel the locks that are on the top of the lower section. You will need to turn them counterclockwise half a turn to unlock the window; if you look directly down you will be able to see them disengage.

  • Lift the lower window a third of the way up. Note the two triangle buttons on the top of the lower frame; push them both towards the center of the window and pull the top of the sill towards you. The lower window will tilt in, making it a breeze to clean.

  • Leave the lower pane open and pull down the upper window a third down. Locate the triangle buttons on the top sill and push them towards the center of the sill. Pull the top section toward you; it, too, will tilt in. You now have both panes of glass tipped into the house and can clean both sides of the window with ease.

  • Close both panes and return them to their normal position.

  • Look on the right side of the window frame 3 inches above the lower sill. You will see a small oblong mechanism that has a ladder pattern on it. Press the bottom of the ladder in and slide it up 1/4 of an inch. A triangle piece will pop out; this is a safety lock. Pop out the safety lock on the left side of the window as well. Now when you slide either the bottom or top pane it only open 3 inches; this is a safety feature that allows you to leave the window open when you are away or asleep without having to worry about closing up your house.
