Wire a 6 Pole Horse Trailer Plug

Horse trailers with electric brakes and an onboard battery connect to the tow vehicle with a 6 pole trailer connector. Replacing this plug when it becomes necessary is a good job for a do-it-yourself type.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6 pole trailer connector Solderless butt connectors Dielectric grease Small screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Remove the small screw that holds the socket end in the body from the side of the trailer plug.

  2. Step 2

Pull the socket end from the body as far as you can.

  3. Step 3

Note the location of each color wire and remove the wires from the socket end by loosening the clamping screw at each terminal.

  4. Step 4

Remove the screw at the back of the body which clamps the body to the cable. Remove the small piece under the screw also.

  5. Step 5

Pull the body off of the cable.

  6. Step 6

Slide the body of the new plug on to the cable until the wires protrude from the open end the same distance as you were able to pull the socket out of the original connector.

  7. Step 7

Insert the wires in the terminals of the new plug, being careful to match the colors to the same terminal location as on the original plug. Tighten the screws securely, but be careful and avoid damaging the wire strands by over tightening.

  8. Step 8

Coat the connections with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.

  9. Step 9

Push the socket in to the body and replace the retaining screw.
