Step 1
Loosen the slip nut which attaches the drain pipe to the bottom of the basket underneath the sink. Slip nuts are large circular pieces with several ridges around the edges. The slip nuts can often be loosened by hand, but stubborn slip nuts require the use of water-pump pliers. Once loosened, slide the slip nut away from the end of the pipe.

Step 2
Loosen the slip nut which attaches the drain pipe to the pipe from the wall. Slide the slip nut away from the end of the pipe.

Move the drain pipe to the side by twisting it.

Unscrew the basket's assembly locknut with a basket strainer wrench. The lock nut is located on the bottom of the sink, and is used to attach the basket assembly to the sink.

Lift the basket assembly away from the top of the sink.

Use a plastic putty knife to scrape away any old putty from where the old sink basket sat in the sink.

Coat the underside of the lip of the new basket with plumber's putty. The lip is the outer portion of the basket which rests against the sink.

Place the new basket into place in the center of the sink.

Step 9
Reinstall the basket's assembly locknut to the bottom of the basket from underneath the sink. Use the basket strainer wrench to tighten the locknut.

Step 10
Reconnect the drain pipe to the bottom of the basket. Secure the pipe to the basket by sliding the slip nut over the threaded portion of the basket and turning the slip nut in a clockwise direction.

Reconnect the drain pipe to the pipe from the wall and secure with the slip nut.
