Many problems can occur within a computer's operating system. Some of these issues are caused by the operating system itself, but most are from third party programs. As programs are installed and removed, they leave remnants of their installation lying in the operating system, waiting. These remnants can trip up another program as soon as soon as it tries to access the same area. This is usually not intentional, but it does occur. When the ghosts in the machine make it hard for you to complete your work, it may be time to reinstall the operating system.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all peripheral devices from your computer, except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

    • 2

Click on the "Start" button on the task bar. Go to "All Programs" and select "HP Tools."

    • 3

Select "HP PC system Recovery." When the Recovery opens, it will ask the question, "Do you really want to start HP PC System Recovery?" Click "Yes."

    • 4

Click "Next" when the Recovery window appears if you want to do a nondestructive recovery. If you want to wipe out your drive and restore everything to factory defaults, then click on the "Advanced" button. When the window pops up, click the "Yes" button. Either way, the process will start.
