How to Change a Fuel Filter on a Chevy Cobalt

As your Chevy Cobalt ages, there are several factors that will sap its power and leave you with a sluggish, less powerful vehicle. One way to make sure you keep that new Cobalt zip is by replacing your Chevy Cobalt's fuel filter. This relatively easy bit of maintenance can restore your Cobalt's power and save you from an expensive fuel pump replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the fuel filter. The fuel filter is between the feed pipe and the fuel injectors. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse and allowing your Cobalt to run until it stalls.

    • 2

Disconnect the negative cable on the battery. Follow the fuel line from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors until you find the filter. The fuel filter on a Chevy Cobalt is located on the right side of the vehicle just behind the front passenger side wheel. Place blocks behind the rear wheels and lift the Cobalt with a jack to gain access.

    • 3

Remove the filter from the clip holder and clamp the fuel feed hoses. Replace the filter and attach the feed hoses. Remove the clamps to restore free avenues for fuel. Reconnect the battery cable.

    • 4

Start the ignition. Inspect the feed hoses at the connections to the filter and make sure there are no fuel leaks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Chevy Cobalt fuel filters can be a little more expensive than other models' fuel filters; expect to pay about $40. It is recommended that the fuel filter be changed (never cleaned) every 30,000 miles.
