How to Strip Paint From Aluminum Wheels

Without taking them to a professional and paying an arm and a leg, there are several methods for removing paint from aluminum wheels. It can be an arduous process, but with a little time and perseverance it will all be worth it in the end. Sandblasting is proven to be a very effective method when dealing with aluminum wheels.

Things You'll Need

• Sandblaster Crushed walnut shells Glass beads Clean cloth terrycloth 000 steel wool

Instructions

1. Wash the wheels with mild dish soap and water and rinse thoroughly.

2. Load the sand blaster with crushed walnut shells.

3. Sandblast the wheels at 125 psi using the nozzle moving back and forth constantly so as not to concentrate on one area too much. Stop frequently to check the progress.

4. Use a 0000 steel wool pad to scrub away any residual paint.

5. Wash the wheels again with soap and water to remove any debris. Dry the wheels with a soft clean towel.

6. Apply a coat of clear lacquer to the wheels with a paint brush.

• Use glass beads instead of crushed walnut shells for a mottled look.

• Wear gloves and eye protection, especially when sandblasting.
