Getting inside of a computer is important when wanting to upgrade. Whether you want to add a second hard drive, upgrade the CPU or just add a little memory, it is essential to get into the computer before any of this can happen. Opening the cover of a computer can destroy the warranty. Most Dell computers are easily opened merely by loosening the cover-mounting thumbscrews. However, there are some Dell designs that are a little trickier.

Instructions

    For some Dell computers

  1. Step 1

    Turn off the computer.

  2. Step 2

    Disconnect all telecommunication and power lines from the computer.

  3. Step 3

    Lay the computer on its side. Make sure the cover is facing up.

  4. Step 4
     

    Slide and hold the cover latch. If your computer does not have a cover latch then ignore this step.

  5. Step 5

    Grip the indents on the computer cover.

  6. Step 6

    Slide the cover to the back of the computer.

  7. Other Dell computers

  8. Step 1

    Turn off the computer.

  9. Step 2

    Disconnect all telecommunication and power lines from the computer.

  10. Step 3

    Lay the computer on its side. Make sure the cover is facing up.

  11. Step 4
    1) Cover-mounting screw, 2) Chassis foot, 3) Cover release latches

    Loosen the cover-mounting thumbscrew.

  12. Step 5

    Use both thumbs to press the cover release latches.

  13. Step 6

    Push the cover toward the back of the computer about 1 inch.

  14. Step 7

    Lift the cover straight up from the computer.
