How to Draw Grass

In drawing, grass can be used as detail to ground the subject of the picture, or as part of the subject itself. The technique you use depends on how long you want your grass to be and how prominent it will be in the picture; in some cases artists choose only to accent patches of grass to set the scene for a composition, rather than illustrating every blade.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine your composition and decide how much grass you want in the picture. If you are drawing a wheelbarrow sitting in grass, do you want the entire lawn in the picture or just a few tufts around the wheels to ground the subject? Once you make this decision, sketch light lines for the area you want to fill with grass.

    • 2

Use upward and downward strokes that are not straight. Start by holding the pencil at the base of your grass area and begin to fill the space with lines, moving the pencil from the base to the tip of the grass and then from the tip to the base of the next blade. If you're drawing a manicured lawn, keep the blades about the same length. If you are drawing wild grass, the blades should be different lengths.

    • 3

Add embellishments to make your grass look realistic. If you are drawing wild grass, there may also be a flower or a wild thorn among the grass; if you are focusing on a lawn, adding a dandelion will make your grass more believable. If the grass is wild or the picture is focused on something small, add dimension to the grass by drawing larger blades with two connected pen strokes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different lengths and amounts of grass on a separate page before choosing a look for your final piece. Try drawing simplistic grass from a great distance, and then more magnified grass as a subject in itself. Becoming more familiar with different perspectives will make the grass in your pictures more realistic from any angle.
