Each day you should check the temperature of your tank to make sure it doesn't fluctuate too drastically. Keep track of the daily temperature to know what is normal for your tank. You should also check the equipment of your tank, such as the filter and lights, to make sure they are working properly.

    • 2

Scrub the inside of the tank to knock off loose algea before continuing with Step 3. This is done once a week. The loose algae will be sucked up by the siphone hose you will use to suck out the water when changing it.

    • 3

Remove any dead plants from the tank if you are keeping live plants in your fish tank. Use a siphon hose once a week to remove about 15 percent of the water into a bucket. Make sure not to suck up your fish. Have some tap water that has already been treated ready to put back in to the tank.

Buy snails to clean the aquarium if you cannot keep it clean through weekly routines alone. They will stick to the side of the tank and clean algae from the rocks and plants.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place your fish tank in a spot easy to reach so you'll be able to clean it properly.
