Spiritualism, the belief that we are able to communicate with spirits, ghosts and other entities, first took shape in the late 1800s. Anyone can claim to be a psychic detective, but to be successful, you must know how to perform a reliable investigation.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camera (Polaroids are preferable, though 35mm and digital are acceptable) Paper and pen Tape recorder Watch Laptop (optional) Compass (optional) Electromagnetic detector (optional) Video camera (optional)
  1. Step 1

Start with a local project that will let you build a reputation, like that house down the street kids claim is haunted, the local cemetery where strange things have happened, or the old restaurant with the cold corner no one likes to sit in.

  2. Step 2

After identifying a project, be sure the people involved with it, such as owners or caretakers, are willing to let you investigate. If you need to trespass to investigate, move on. Your goal is to share information.

  3. Step 3

Gather information from anyone involved with the psychic disturbance, find out who was present at an incident, and write down everything you discover. Who is experiencing the most occurrences? Where are occurrences most prominent? Promise confidentiality to your sources, and stay true to that.

  4. Step 4

After the interviews, research independently at your local library. Most libraries and courthouses have sections devoted to local history, house deeds and topographical maps. Look for pertinent clues. For example, if you are investigating a house, who built it? Was it used for anything other than a residence? Who were the previous owners or tenants?

  5. Step 5

Using your independent research, look for individuals who have lived in the area a long time and who may know more than what is on the deed or map. Check nursing homes and retirement centers for seniors with information, and post notices at your local supermarket. Remember that some people just love a good story, true or not, and analyze any new information with discretion.

  6. Step 6

Begin your investigation of the area where the activity has reportedly occurred by noting things that could be mistaken for paranormal activity, such as uneven doors and loose windows.

  7. Step 7

Set up in the places where the most activity has been reported, making sure you have fresh batteries for your electronics. Settle in and stay aware, making note of any strange occurrences.
If others are assisting you, be sure they know your rules and debrief immediately afterwards, comparing notes, experiences and pictures anyone has taken.

  8. Step 8

Review all the information within a few hours or days; don't wait weeks to review tape recordings or pictures snapped at the scene. See if any evidence matches up with your research.

  9. Step 9

Conclude your investigation by determining exactly what type of paranormal activity was present, if it could have been a hoax and anything else of interest. Write a summary of your findings.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you gain experience, you will find your intuition becoming sharper. Learn through trial and error how and when to pay more attention to these feelings.
  • Not everyone believes in the paranormal. Be willing to respect other perspectives, even if they don't represent your belief system.
