Bifold or folding doors come in a variety of styles and sizes, including louvered, plain and decorative panel. They're commonly used on closets because they can be opened all the way so that everything in the closet is visible. Since they don't swing out, they save space in small rooms. Folding doors can also be used as room dividers. Hanging folding doors can be done in a couple of hours by a do-it-yourselfer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

      Measure the distance between the two jambs to determine how much track and what size doors you'll need.

      Paint or stain the doors if you bought them unfinished.

      Install hinges on the doors. Ready-to-install door sets come with hinges already attached. Hinges should be placed 7 inches from the top, 11 inches from the bottom and in the center between these two measurements.

      Follow the instructions that came with your hardware for installing the pivot plates and locking arms that came with the hardware. Pivot plates fit into the track at the top and the floor bracket at the bottom. Locking arms slide along the track.

      Fit and install the top track and slide the hanging hardware onto it. Make sure the track is perfectly level. Use shims if needed.

      Install a floor bracket in the floor next to the doorjamb.

      Put the lower pivot point on the door into the floor bracket. Then put the top pivot point in the upper socket.

      Attach the door pulls and align the doors if necessary. Adjust the track sockets to make them fit evenly. Raise or lower the doors by changing the height of the lower pivot pin.
