How to Restring a 6-String Guitar

This article explains how to restring a six-string guitar. Whether a string snaps or you just want a new or different set of strings, knowing the correct way to restring a six-string guitar is a invaluable skill to have. A guitar can be taken to a music store to be professionally restrung, but this can become quite costly. Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar New set of strings Wire cutters (optional)
  1. Step 1

    Loosen all six of the guitar strings by turning the tuning peg located at the top of the guitar, or the "headstock."

  2. Step 2

    Run your finger down the neck of the guitar and locate the other end, where the strings attach to the body of the guitar

  3. Step 3

    Pull up the circular pegs that house the base of the string. Do this for each of the six strings.

  4. Step 4

    Unwind or snip the other end of the strings that are attached to the tuning peg posts.

  5. Step 5

    Locate your new package of strings. Note that each string has a different thickness. The stings are assembled from thickest to thinnest on the guitar.

  6. Step 6

    Place the base of the string inside the circular peg that you pulled up from the bridge. Slide it back down into position.

  7. Step 7

    Extend the string up the neck of the guitar, be sure you catch the string on the two notches that keep it is place.

  8. Step 8

    Slide the string through the tuning peg post.

  9. Step 9

    Wind the string clockwise around the post and underneath the string that you just slide through the post opening.

  10. Step 10

    Pinch up on the string so that it stays in place without you holding it there.

  11. Step 11

    Turn the tuning peg to tighten the string. Repeat this process for all 6 strings.

  12. Step 12

    Snip off all the excess string from the top using the wire cutters.

  13. Step 13

    Tune the guitar after all of the strings have been put in place.
