How to Become a Network Administrator

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for network administrators is excellent and will have grown 18 percent by 2016. This adds up to 155,000 new jobs nationwide over the next 10 years. These professionals are responsible for managing local area networks, or LAN, and wide area networks, or WAN, and online functions for a business. They also maintain a company's software and hardware, troubleshoot problems, and ensure network security is in place. But before becoming a network administrator, you must complete the required education and update your resume. Here's a guide to becoming a network administrator.

Instructions

    • 1

Earn a bachelor's degree in computer science. Most employers require network administrators to earn a bachelor's degree in computer science or another related area. For a directory of schools that offer this degree, check out Yahoo Directory (see Resources). You can narrow your search results by geography to find a school near you.

Seek internship experience. While in college, apply for internships that allow you exposure to working as a network administrator. To find these types of internships, check out Intern Search (see Resources), a company that provides a nationwide directory of internships. Also, check with your college career department for local opportunities.

Update your resume. After you've earned the required experience, you need to update your resume with your new skills. Highlight your internship experience managing local area networks and utilizing wireless technology in a work environment. For sample resumes, check out Career Play Book (see Resources).

Apply for network administrator jobs. Check out Dice (see Resources), which is a job board geared toward network administrators and those with a technical background. You can also check out more general job boards such as Monster or Simply Hired, which post network administrator positions.

    • 5

Negotiate your salary and compensation package. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national salary range for network administrators is $48,520 to $97,000 per year. Make sure to always make a counter offer on your salary and compensation package.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider technical programs. Some companies will consider individuals with an associate's degree in computer science from a technical college. To get an idea of what companies in your area require, contact a few network administers at local companies.

  • Don't forget to apply for financial aid. If you need financial assistance, complete the Free Application for Student Aid (see Resources), which allows you to be considered for student loans and grants.
