1
Acquire the supplies needed to create the pennant at a discount or hobby store. Felt from the fabric department makes a suitable pennant when cut into an elongated triangle shape. Alternatively, use two triangular pieces of cotton fabric fused together with iron-on fusible web for added stiffness. Use fabric paint and stencils to create lettering. You might also use felt or foam letters to create words for the pennant. Also, purchase or create themed graphic objects such as sports items. If you wish to hold the pennant rather than hang it on the wall, purchase a dowel approximately 12 inches to 15 inches long.

Cut the large piece of felt, or the cotton fabric pieces and fusible web, into elongated, pennant shaped triangles. The wide end of the triangle should be 10 inches wide. Create the other two sides of the triangle extending the entire 25-inch length of the fabric. If using cotton and fusible web, iron the two pieces of cotton together with the fusible web between them.

Cut 10 inches from the 15-inch by 1-inch piece of felt. Glue this down the 10-inch wide end of the pennant to form a stripe of decoration. Place it approximately ½-inch from the edge. Use the remaining five inches of this piece to make two small tassel like decorations. Cut the 5-inch piece in half. Glue one piece to the back of the 10-inch wide end of the pennant at the top and one at the bottom to form tassel like decorations that extend from the 10-inch end of your pennant.

The theme of your pennant decides the lettering or words used on it. Words or letters might be that of a sports team or college. General themes such as dance, band, cheer or drama also make suitable themes. Create words and letters to go along with your theme and place these decoratively on the pennant with fabric glue.

Add graphic and decorative items to the pennant for further eye appeal. Sporting equipment, team mascots and jersey numbers make great sports related graphic items. Choose appropriate graphic items to go along with non-sports pennants such as a ballet slipper for dance or a musical instrument for a band. Attach these with fabric glue.

Finally, if you plan to carry the pennant rather than hang it on a wall, attach a wooden dowel to it. Lay the dowel along the 10-inch edge of the pennant at the back. Fold over the ½-inch edge you left when attaching the contrasting or coordinating strip of felt to the front of the 10-inch edge. Use fabric glue to glue the ½-inch edge over the wood dowel. Let this dry completely before handling it.
