Shopping for a great-fitting bicycle can be painstaking. Although you should always be measured and matched to a bike by a qualified salesperson or bicycle mechanic, you can get an idea of the frame size you will need by measuring your inseam length. This process is also useful if you plan to rent or borrow a bicycle for a short time, and do not expect to be professionally fitted.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ruler Measuring tape
  1. Step 1

Put on normal cycling clothes, including Lycra shorts, but remain barefoot. Stand straight against a wall.

  2. Step 2

Slide a ruler between your legs and pull it flat and snug against the shorts' chamois, as if it were a bicycle saddle.

  3. Step 3

Have your partner measure in centimeters the distance from the ruler to the floor. This is your inseam length.

  4. Step 4

Calculate your approximate frame size by multiplying your inseam by 2/3. Take the resulting length and your inseam measurement with you when you go shopping for bikes. A qualified salesperson will be able to assist you in finding the exact size you need.
