How to Patch an AeroBed

Linnea Andreasson

Find out how to patch an AeroBed, pinpoint problems and what measures must be taken to ensure longevity.

The first few times you inflate an AeroBed air mattress it will feel as if it’s deflating. While the amount of air on the inside remains the same, on a brand-new mattress, the synthetic material stretches and causes the volume to expand, leaving excess room. So, before you assume that you have a puncture in need of a patch, give it a test run by sleeping on it for a few nights.

Tip

Deflation may not be caused by a puncture, but by the AeroBed's built-in Whoosh system, which is a pump that inflates and deflates the mattress. To test that the Whoosh system is working properly, inflate the mattress and place your hand over the air vent. If you feel an air leak, get a replacement.

Fix the Leak

If, however, you're confident that the mattress has a puncture or tear, you must address the problem immediately and refrain from using your AeroBed until you've completed the patch. Before you start looking for the leak, inflate the mattress and unplug it.

    Find the Puncture

  1. In a spray bottle, mix together a cup of water with a cap of dishwasher liquid. Carefully spray a light layer of the soapy mixture on the mattress, ensuring you stay well away from the inflation vent. Air bubbles will appear in the areas where a leak is present. Use your hands to flatten out the affected area and ensure the mattress is not creased.

  2. Patch the Puncture

  3. With a clean, dry cloth, wipe down the surface on and around the puncture until it’s completely dry. Use scissors to cut the repair patch down to size, ensuring you leave a bit less than 1/2 inch or 1 centimeter of excess material around the edges. Apply a thin layer of glue to the underside of the patch and press it over the puncture. Wait for at least 24 hours.

  4. Inflate the Mattress

  5. Pump up the mattress to around 90 percent and leave it for a few hours. If it stays inflated, you should be able to continue using the mattress.

  6. Warning

Most AeroBeds will inflate within 60 seconds. Over-inflation can lead to burst seams, punctures and tearing. When the material is stressed, you incur a greater chance of causing damage. The first time you use an AeroBed mattress, inflate it only around 90 percent, which allows the synthetic material to stretch slowly but safely.

    Tip

Once the mattress is inflated, leave it inflated for as long as you can to help the material stretch.

Abide by the Weight Limit

All AeroBed mattresses have a weight limit -- commonly 400 to 500 pounds. However, this can vary depending on the material and whether it’s designed for more than one person.

Warning

  • Do not exceed the recommended weight limit.
  • Do not let children jump on an AeroBed mattress. The sudden buildup of pressure may stretch the plastic and stress the seams, which could cause tears, punctures or bulging.
  • Keep cats and dogs away from AeroBed mattresses; they could puncture the material with their claws.

If you have a brand-new AeroBed mattress and encounter inflation issues after you've broken it in, take it back to the store and get a replacement. Alternatively, follow the instructions that came with it for return and replacement.
