Embarq is an American phone company that serves residences and businesses. It has other services including high-speed Internet (DSL) and satellite television. If you want to use Embarq DSL, you will be required to connect to a router. A router is also necessary if you have more than one computer that you want to connect to the Embarq modem. Basic computer knowledge and a few items are all you need to complete this project. The details provided here are for a commonly used Linksys wireless router. Other routers may differ slightly, but the connection process will be similar.

      Gather all materials and power everything down. This includes the Embarq modem, red cable, router and Ethernet cables for each additional computer. Turn off your computer, the Embarq DSL modem and the router.

      Connect the router to the Embarq DSL modem. Use the Ethernet cable provided from Embarq (red). Plug it in the back of the modem. Connect the other end of it to the router Internet port. Find this on the back of the router.

      Connect an Ethernet cable to the computer. Connect the other end of this cable in an available Ethernet port on the router. Repeat this step for each computer being added to the router. Plug the router into a power source.

      Turn on your hardware. Power up the router, Embarq modem and the computer(s). Open an Internet browser. Type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar and "Enter."

      Supply the requested information. A window appears requesting "User Name" and "Password" for the network. Leave the first one blank and type in "admin" for the password. Click on "OK" to open the "Setup" screen.

      Check under "Network Setup" that the "Internet Connection Type" has "Obtain an IP automatically" selected. Change the "Local IP address" to 192.168.3.1. Click on the button marked "Save Settings" to apply.

      Restart your computer to finish. Open a web browser to verify the connection. Contact Embarq or the manufacturer of the router, if any problems arise.   • Use the CD installation disc provided with the router when it is available. This will begin an automatic "Wizard" to assist you in connecting the router to the Embarq DSL modem.
