How to Decorate Columns

There are only three types of columns--nicely decorated columns, eyesore columns and ignored columns. Making sure the columns in your home are nicely decorated is a goal of every person with columns. Don't panic--creating nicely decorated columns is not as daunting of a task as it may seem. Take a deep breath and relax. Help in decorating your columns is on the way.

  • Paint the columns a color that contrasts with the color of the walls in the room. Warm shades will work in a living room, family room or study. Cooler shades work best in kitchens. Consult a color wheel and choose a color that will complement the other colors in the room.

  • Use stencils to add depth and dimension to the columns. Add designs or shapes that are found in the room. Keep the designs, shapes and colors simple. You don't want your columns to distract from the rest of your room.

  • Loosely wrap fabric around the columns. Add texture to your columns by using tweed, satin or faux leather. Consider the types and colors of the other fabrics you are using in room. Make sure the texture and colors complement the rest of your room.

  • Add silk flowers and vines to the columns. Loosely wrap vines around your columns. Sparsely use silk flowers to add color and texture. Too many flowers and vines can turn your columns into a jungle. Make sure the flowers you choose complement the room.
